If you have possible birth/death dates and places have you tried www. familysearch.org. It is a free site and that is where I started.
At the top of the page you will see a boc that says SEARCH RECORDS.
I like the Records search pilot really well.
You might try it....they have some census records and marriage records etc.

also...you may contact your nearest Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and see if they have a Family History center there. If they do there will be qualified staff there to help you and it is also free and no pressure to join anything.
