If I know what county and state a family lived in, I like to go to the Census-online website to search the census records of that area. Many times, if I find my ancestor I also find out they are connected in some way to a close neighbor. http://www.census-online.com/

While Census-Online contains many good resources, Census Finder is updated frequently and well maintained.
