| The Basics |
This site breaks records into two categories:
- Individuals - Individual records include all names, descriptions of the individual, and dates pertaining solely to the individual, such as Birth, Death, Burial, etc...
- Families - These are limited to an immediate family. They do not store information related to the members of the family. Families only provide links to the members of the family and dates pertaining to the family, such as Marriage, Divorce, Engagement, etc...
The search tool only searches the Individual records. This is because once you find the individual you are looking for, you can view all the families and relationships on the individuals page.
We are working on ways to reduce the number of duplicate individuals in the database, but we ask that if you see any duplicates as you use this site, please fully confirm that it is a duplicate. Then help consolidate the useful information and remove the duplicate.

| Search |
Click search if you want to locate an individual in the Noktree database. Type in your search criteria. If no results come up in your search, try changing your criteria. Try variations of criteria, such as New York as NY and Samuel as Sam. |
| Add Individuals |
Before adding an individual, check to see if he/she is already in the database. If not, click on "Add Individual" at the top of the Noktree Webpage. Fill out all known information in the empty boxes. Be sure to copy the security key in the space provided then "Save Changes". You will want to keep track of the individual's ID number. One way to do this is to add them to your QuickList. |
| Add Families |
Before adding a family, check to see if members of a specific family are already in the database. In order to create a family, the individuals you want to include in the family must be in the Noktree database. To create a family, click "Add Family", fill out at least two individuals. Use the individuals ID Numbers from Noktree.
Another easy way to add individuals, is to go to the individuals page and click on "Add to QuickList". Now your individual is on your "QuickList". Next go to the "Add Family" page. Click in the space where you want to add that individual and then click "Use" under his/her name on "QuickList". That individual's ID Number will be automatically entered in the space you clicked.
Be sure to copy the security key in the space provided then click "Save Changes". |
| QuickList |
When you are on an Individual's page, you can click "Add to QuickList". This will put your individual on your "QuickList". To quickly access an individual's page, just click on his/or her name from the "QuickList".
Under the names you add to your "QuickList" you will see "Use". If you click on a field (example, on Sticky Pad) in Noktree then click "Use" under an individual's name in "QuickList", that individual's Noktree ID Number will appear on that field. For a Stick-It, that Noktree ID Number will be converted into an individual's name on "My Research".
Click "Delete" under "QuickList" to remove an individual from the "QuickList". |
| My Research |
By clicking on "My Research" you will access your own personal research page that allows you to make notes or to review your "Watchlist" and "Stick-Its".
Store your own research notes - Just use the "Edit Notes" button below "Notes". Write your message and push the "Save Changes" button.
View a list (Watchlist) of individuals in the database for any changes. Individuals can be added to your "Watchlist" by clicking the "Add to Watchlist" from an individual's page.

| My Gedcoms |
Here is a very detailed step-by-step guide to help you through My Gedcoms.
Don't let the length of this explanation fool you, it isn't too difficult.
Currently, we accept gedcoms that are version 5.5 and less than 8 MB in size.
Remember it is important to import families as well as individuals.
I don't have a Gedcom, but I use a major family tree program:
- You need to create the gedcom file. With most major family tree programs there is a way to export gedcom files of your family tree. Usually through File->Export then choose gedcom as the file type. Now, continue onto the "I have a Gedcom section".
I have a Gedcom:
- Once you have your gedcom, go to the My Gedcom page and in the upload section browse for the .ged file you created. Once selected, click Upload File. This may take a while to upload depending on your internet connection speed.
- If the upload was successful, the file should now show up in the My Files list.
- Next, the NokTree servers need to find all of the individuals and families listed in the gedcom. To do this click "Start Reading". If the gedcom is a large file, you may need to click "Continue Reading" after the page loads. When the file finishes it will say "Reading Complete". If it says "Error Reading", the NokTree server was unable to read your file. We are working on ways to read as many files as possible, but if you receive that error, we are currently unable to read your file. We do not accept copyrighted files, if you own the file you are uploading you will need to remove the copyright before uploading it.
- Once you see "Reading Complete", your gedcom has been read by the server and you can start importing individuals and families. You will see, Individuals Read: # and Families Read: #. These numbers are indicating what the server has found after reading your gedcom. Before you import your families you should import the individuals first. This is because a family only links the individuals, so without importing the individuals first you are unable to import the families.
- Clicking Individuals Read will bring up a list of the individuals in your gedcom file. The duplicate column indicates the possibility that this individual is already listed in the database. If it reads "Maybe", please search for the individual first to help reduce the number of duplicate individuals stored in the database. The importable column indicates whether the individual is able to be imported into the database. If it isn't you are going to have to edit the individual to make them importable. You may also want to click Edit/View to make sure the program was able to accurately find all the relevant information. When you are ready to import the individual into the NokTree database simply check the import box, type in the security key, and click "Import Individuals". Repeat that for all the individuals you wish to import. To view individuals you have imported, there is an "Imported" link in the upper right corner. Or you can go to "My Research" and click "My Individuals".
- Now that you have imported the individuals, you can now import the families. These are the links that connect individuals in each immediate family. Go back to my gedcoms and click "Families Read". This will now bring up a list of families found in the gedcom. If the family is importable you can import it into the NokTree database. Families become importable once all the individuals of that family have been imported. If you wish to leave out a member of a family, you can edit that family and remove that member's id number. Click save and now that family should become importable. Once you are ready to import the family, the process is the same as importing individuals. To view families you have imported, there is an "Imported" link in the upper right corner. Or you can go to "My Research" and click "My Families".

| Versioning |
The process for reverting and reviving individuals and families is the same. For simplicities sake, we will explain it just for individuals.
Reviving is for individuals that have been deleted.
Reverting is for individuals that are still available.
Revert:
When individuals are added or edited, a backup version is created and stored with that individual. When viewing the individuals page, in the upper left corner there is an indicator that tells you the current version of this individual. If there is more than one version, you have the ability to revert back to a previous version. Clicking versions will bring you to a list of every stored version for the individual. The editor listed is the user that created that version of the individual. Clicking on the version number will show you the individual's detail during that version. If you feel you need to revert the individual to a previous version; please fully confirm first then click the version you want to revert back to, type in the security code, and click "Revert".
Revive:
If an individual was deleted, only the users that have added, edited, or deleted the individual are allowed to revive the individual. This is because of privacy reasons. To revive an individual, go to the individual's page. If you have privileges to revive the individual an option will show up that says "REVIVE THIS INDIVIDUAL". Click that and the process is the same as reverting individuals. The editor listed is the user that created that version of the individual. Clicking on the version number will show you the individual's detail during that version. If you feel you need to revert the individual to a previous version; please fully confirm first then click the version you want to revert back to, type in the security code, and click "Revive".
